Obituary for Leon Joseph Barbeau

Passed away September 5, 2017 at the age of 80, in the arms of his children. Husband of the late Coreen (Parent) Barbeau. Dearest father to Andrew, Pamela and Christine (Scott) Neal. Adored Grandpa of Leon and Andrew Jr. Barbeau, Zachery and Riley Graham, Erin Neal (Rob Charette) and Clancy and Megan Neal. Great Grandpa of Lily Charette. Son of the late Toby and Germaine (Lepage) Barbeau. Special cousin to Alma King. Brother in law and friend of Marty and Cathy Sweezey, Marilyn Parent, Elenor Muncaster, Brenda Parent (late Jim Parent), Joyce Grant and Reg (Laura) Parent. Leon touched the lives of many throughout his teaching career. He began teaching in 1958 in Fort McMurray Alberta and returned to Sault Set Marie in 1960 to become vice principle of Notre Dame Des Ecole. He then became principle at this school in 1964. He was the centre of the French community at Notre Dame and brought the choir to the forefront of the community festivals. Notre Dame choir won many years for their excellence in local competitions. He also started the athletic programs such as basketball, hockey, soccer etc. for all students and he coached some of them as well. He had many accomplishments throughout his career. In 1972 the Huron District Catholic School Board awarded him the teacher of the year. He was very proud of his award but also very modest about it and rarely spoke of it. In 1977 he transferred over to St Marys College where he taught the French program and world religion. He will be missed by many. As per Leon’s wishes, there will be no visitation or services.
